Dental Woes...

This sweet baby girl of mine went to the dentist last week to find out that she has five cavities.  Can you believe that?  FIVE!  I felt like THE worst kind of mother--I promise we blush and floss and I regulate candy as best I can.  The dentist must have felt sorry for us, because he explained that some people are just born with 'bad' teeth, and no amount of preventatives will change that.

Because of the extent of damage to one of her teeth, this dentist wanted her to see a pediatric dentist to have the actual work done.  After several hours on the phone trying to find a pediatric dentist that was a preferred provider with our insurance, I found one near our home and made the appointment for yesterday morning.

I won't go into all the details, but let me just say, I was horrified.  This particular office is probably in the dictionary under the word incompetent.  I left the office fighting back tears.  I never want to project my fears or worries onto the girls, so I kept my mouth closed and my eyes dry while Libby was near.  Then I spent the ENTIRE day on the phone trying to get second opinions and find another dentist that we could see, without having to sale our house.

Finally, after lots of calls and tears and emails and generally feeling like I was going to throw up, we have found a second pediatric dentist.  It is NOT near our home, but he did come recommended and I feel so much more comfortable with this office.  Libby will be going to see him this morning for, most likely, some extensive dental work.

She is brave.  She is fine.  Mommy is not.  I am worried sick.  After such a traumatic experience at the dentist yesterday, I'm not looking forward to seeing yet another dentist.  I have high hopes for this one though, and strong prayers that everything will be great for Libby.  Her appointment is at 9am this(Thursday) morning.  Say a little prayer for us that everything goes smoothly!

  1. Don't worry, Courtney. Libby will be fine. Just like what your dentist mentioned, some people are just born with bad teeth. Preventives like regular brushing and flossing will help, but only to such an extent. Anyway, I'm glad you have found the perfect dentist for her. All the best to the whole family! :)
