4 Ways to Get Back in the Habit of Exercising

I love running. I love most physical activities, but running is definitely my favorite. That being said, it is SO hard to get back into the habit of exercising after a break. (Or get started, period.). This is also the time of year when all those New Years Resolutions start sliding. You were doing so well working out then the cold weather put everything on hold. Now you're trying to get back into the habit.

After the half that killed my hip three weeks ago, I've run a grand total of three times. My hip is better. It didn't hurt on any of those three runs, but it does ache when I'm sitting still. It's especially rough on long car rides (which I've had several of lately) and right before I fall asleep at night.  With all that, I've gotten out of the habit of exercise.

With my next half being two months away, I've GOT to get back on the training plan. If it's this hard for ME, someone who generally loves exercise, to restart my running plan, I can only imagine how tough it is for those of you who don't enjoy sweating. So for all of us, here are my tips to start (or restart) an exercise habit.

1. Just go. Go in the morning. Go in the evening. Go on your lunch break. Just go. Don't talk to yourself about it. Don't let that time be optional. Look at your calendar, find a time that works for you, and go!

2. Find a partner. Or two. With the weather slowly getting nicer, I'm rounding up some friends to meet me for early morning runs. Having accountability is the number one way to ensure you won't skip a workout.

3. Have a motivational wall. Whether it's a physical wall or a Pinterest board, gather together some things that motivate you. It doesn't need to be all photos either. Seeing a super toned female in a bikini is not my motivation. Yes, I want to be super toned, and I'm proud of that girl for her achievement, but I don't want to motivate myself by the success of someone else. I prefer my motivation to come from quotes. You can find my motivational Pinterest board here.

4. Make it fun. Even though I love running, it can get boring if I do it every day. Find something you love, but still mix it up. Try new things. Do what you love a different way. I can run for fun, train for races, or work on speed. I also like to throw in yoga, spin, kickboxing....anything to change up my routine so boredom doesn't set in.

I'm trying my hardest to get back in the habit this week.

Do you have any tips to share with me?

Weekly Workouts

If you'll remember, I completely let go of all running-related stress last week.  Then, this week, I had to keep reminding myself not to stress :)  The week started out great, but then fizzled toward the end with all the sickness we had going on.  The Callaway Gardens half is just a little over 6 weeks away, so I've got to get the miles in!

Monday:  4 miles on the treadmill.  I watched Melissa and Joey on Netflix, which is HILARIOUS if you've never seen it!

Tuesday:  Session 1 (30 minutes) of Jillian Michael's Yoga Meltdown DVD.  This KICKS my tail every time I do it.  Probably because I only do it once every few months, but I'm going to work on that :)

Wednesday: 5 miles on the treadmill. <--I'm REALLY wanting some outdoor runs!!  It's just too cold!  I do change up my incline to mimic outdoor running, but it's just not the same!

Thursday:  7-minute workout (I'll explain more about this later!)

Sunday:  8 miles on the treadmill.

Total miles this week: 17
Total miles that I was 'supposed' to run, according to the training plan: 25

SHOUT OUT to my friend Anna, who ran the Rocket City marathon yesterday morning.  It was her first marathon, and she finished in 4:25:00!! GO Anna!!! <--After saying that I NEVER wanted to run the marathon distance, this made me change my mind a little.  We are discussing the idea of a fall 2014 marathon.  (ONLY discussing, so don't hold me to anything just yet!)

What is your favorite race distance?
Mine is still the 5k, because I like the shorter, fast race.  I'm really digging the half though, too.

If you had to pick only ONE race to run each year, what would it be?
Toray Rebuilding Together 5k.  It is the first race (post-high school) that I ran and it holds special memories for me.

The Struggle

After all those warm-weather-in-December comments that I made, our temperature dropped from 70 degrees to upper 20's overnight.  Mother Nature thinks she's funny.

My running this week has been almost non-existent.  I have the motivation to run, I just don't have the time.  (I say that loosely.  If I had MORE motivation, I guess I would get up at 4am to run each morning, but that's not happening!)

I took Monday off after Sunday's long run.  I did 3.5 miles on the treadmill on Tuesday and 3 miles on Wednesday.  When I missed Thursday's run, I shrugged it off.  NBD.  Then I missed Friday's.

I was signed up for a 5K on Saturday morning--one that I had actually payed for--and skipped it.  The run was at 8 am and K was in a Christmas parade that started at 9:30.  Techinically, I probably could have squeezed in both but it was too much rushing for me, so I ditched the race.  Then, this morning's long run didn't happen.  There really is no excuse, other than the weather predicted a 70% chance of rain at 5am and I believed the forecast.  Just so you know, it wasn't raining at 5am, but I didn't get out of bed.

When I finally rolled out of bed this morning, I started to get a little stressed.  I am in the middle of half marathon training again, and really want to do well in this race at the end of January.  I NEED those runs to get me ready.  But after a few minutes of a pity party, I reminded myself that I LOVE running.  I do it because it is FUN for me.  If I let myself stress over missed workouts, its not going to keep being fun.  Yes, the training is important.  But this is also December, the most busy month of the year.

So this morning, I made an important decision.  There will be ZERO stressing over running this month.  If I'm able to get the workout in, GREAT!  If not, that's ok too.  I'm sure I'll be able to run enough that I don't lose any fitness, and then I'll have the whole month of January to work at getting faster.

The point of all this rambling is this----> Working out should be FUN!  If you don't like what you are doing, find something else that you do enjoy.  Don't stress over missed workouts (unless your days turn into weeks, that turn into months...then you might need to reconsider!).

And if you need more encouragement, you can read Presley's post here or this post about falling in love with running.

How to Run on a Treadmill Without Dying of Boredom

First, an update on the girls.  They were up sick most of the night last night.  Libby was crying with a headache and running a low grade fever.  Kyndall was crying with her throat, and actually started throwing up (again) around 2am.  What is it about kids that make them be deathly sick during the night, and then fine as can be in the mornings?  I mean, not that I want my kids to be sick, but some consistency would be nice.  Sick, not sick.  Help me out here.  There is nothing worse than going to the doctors office, waiting 2 hours (at least), paying the outrageous copay, only to be told its "just a virus."  Am I right?

I was fairly certain K had strep, again.  I'm not sure what is going on with Libby, but I might as well get her checked out, too.  This is what happens when you have 2 sick girls, who do not know they are sick, and the doctor can't see you until 11.

The West girls are pretty awesome at some Jenga :)

After a somewhat short wait, and the outrageous copay, it was just a virus.   Money in the trash, right there.  I guess I should just be grateful that it wasn't anything serious.  Always look for the positive :)

And now on to more important things......

How to Run On A Treadmill Without Dying of Boredom

Being a southern runner, who is also a mom, I do a large part of my training on the treadmill.  (I'm not sure if you are familiar with the humidity in Alabama, but it's killer.)  I struggled with major boredom for a long time while running on the treadmill, but now I actually enjoy it.  It's definitely not the same as running outdoors, but it is convenient when it's your only way to run.

1. Read a magazine.  This is actually my least favorite, but it works.  Not only does it sidetrack your mind from being bored, but it covers up the data screen.  I don't let myself look until I've finished the whole magazine, and I'm usually presently surprised.  The reason this is my least favorite is because I have to turn the pages more.  It's more difficult to keep my stride when I'm turning the pages every few seconds.

2.  Read a book.  Also covers the screen and I don't let myself look until I've finished a chapter.  Turning pages isn't really an issue because all I have to do is tap the screen for the page to turn.  Gotta love the Kindle :)  I've heard a lot of people say that it's hard to read while they run, and I've decided these people must be really bouncy runners.  I have no issue with it, even when I increase my speed to a near sprint.

3.  Watch Netflix.  Or Youtube.  Or Hulu.  Or whatever digital streaming device you have.  This is one of my favorites, but I have a hard time stopping.  Oh, I might stop running after an episode, but I can't stop watching after one episode.  Hello, Gossip Girl and your 7 seasons.  The great thing about this is that 30-min, or 45-min depending on what you are watching, seems to fly by when you are zoned into a good show.

4.  Switch it up.  I have two go-to workouts on the treadmill that I use when I'm not doing one of the above.  The constant clock watching and pace/incline changing make the time go by quickly.  Here are two routines I use often:

Do you run on a treadmill?

What are your tips?

Warrior Dash(es)

I have two Warrior Dash medals.  One from Warrior Dash Tennessee and one from Warrior, Alabama. Everyone should do at least ONE obstacle course in their life, and I definitely recommend Warrior Dash.  It's a short enough distance (3.1 miles) that most people can do it without TOO much training, and that it's still lots of fun.  Others, like Tough Mudder, seem too long to me.  Maybe I'm just not hardcore enough, but 13.1 miles PLUS obstacles is a lot.

My first Warrior Dash was the Tennessee one.  Justin and I went with Josh and Emily, and Alison met us there.

Here we are before:

And then after:

I think Alison swam through the mud in some of the obstacles.  Or maybe she fell?!?!

Warrior Dash Tennessee was a relatively flat course with lots of obstacles:  cargo net climbs, rope walls, climbing over old cars.  It was SO much fun!

For the dash in Warrior, Alabama, we were a little more experienced.  Only Emily and I were able to go, but we thought through our outfits a little more and decided on something cute:

We took this photo indoors because it was POURING down rain.  We headed out anyways and ended up running the dash in the rain.  I think this helped keep us a little cleaner, as well as the swim through the pond towards the end.  Here is our after:

The only thing different about Warrior, AL's dash was that the running course was definitely tougher.  I felt like we were running up and down the side of a steep mountain.  We would run up, back down, and up again the side of a hill so steep that people were holding onto trees to keep from sliding back down (the rain didn't help this!).  Then out through a field and through a few obstacles and back to the hill up and downs again.  Still lots of fun but definitely more tough than Tennessee's course.

Check out the Warrior Dash site for locations and dates.  And then let me know if you sign up--I might just join you :)

Pile On The Miles, Week 2

Total Miles this Week:  7.5
Total Miles this Month: 21.5

November 5:  1 mile with my girls + 3 miles by myself = 4 miles total

November 7:  3.5 treadmill miles with Gossip Girl and Netflix.  Plus 2.5 miles walking around the craft show in Birmingham, if you're counting those.  (I'm not, since I'm pretty sure that is a slight over-exaggeration.  It was TONS of fun though!)

My first running injury happened this week.  A pain in the bottom of my right foot, at the forefront.  It started on Tuesday after my run and has gradually gotten worse.  As I'm writing this, I can barely walk on it.  I placed extra cushion on the bottom of my foot and wrapped it in an ACE bandage.  I've been icing and elevating it as much as possible today and fingers-crossed, it'll be all better tomorrow.  It will, right?  Because I need it to be REALLY badly!  Can you wish an injury away?

Anyways, go on over to Monica's blog for many, more impressive, pile on the miles reports.  And join in--she's giving away some really cool prizes!

Pile on the Miles

I'll be back later today with a Halloween post.  But before I get to that, HELLO NOVEMBER! This day begins my most favorite time of year--from now until the end of January.  I just LOVE the holidays (and my birthday is at the end of January, so that is included!)

This year, I am joining in on Run, Eat, Repeat's Pile on the Mile's November challenge.  You can read more about it on her blog, but basically, you set a goal of miles that you want to run....or walk..... or bike, and try to achieve that.  The goal is to pile on the miles, not the pounds :)

My goal is 100 miles in November.  I am helping my friend Anna train for the Rocket City Marathon, so I don't think 100 miles will be unattainable.  (Note:  I am not running the marathon with her, just doing some training runs.  I haven't talked myself into that distance yet!)

If you're interested, go over to her blog and sign up.  She's has some awesome sponsors and is doing some GREAT giveaways!  If you decide to sign up, come back here and let me know!

Yo Aasics, I'm Your Girl!

I came across a post the other day titled So where's all my free sh*t? .  It made me laugh out loud.  **Warning:  While hilarious, the above mentioned blogger does have a potty mouth!**

When I started this blog, it was for a few reasons.
  1. I wanted to be able to share our lives with long-distance family.
  2. It was a quick and easy version of digital scrapbooking, without the page-designs.  Post pictures + words and viola!  Instant memory keeping.
  3. Vent my feelings, stand on my soapbox, just yap on and on about whatever I wanted to.
I never even considered the fact that bloggers get free stuff.  I don't think I even knew that they did.  As I've read more and more blogs, I now know that companies often send bloggers free stuff for review and it was so ironic to read the above post when I did.

There are a few things I would want for free.  I am an avid Aasics shoe girl.  Loyal to a fault.  Ran in them in high school, run in them now.  Yo Aasics.... need a review?  I'm your girl! :)  I would also like a free Sweaty Band.  I'm not convinced that they actually stay put.  Not convinced enough to fork over $15 anyways.  Socks?  Sure--any brand, any type. I'll be glad to try them out for you.  Tech gear, I'm all over that.  Free watches, free apps, free heart rate monitors.. send it all my way and I'm definitely in.

Nail polish, makeup, clothing of ANY kind, hair accessories.... all good.  But above all that, here is a list of things I would NOT want to review:
  • Underwear.  I wouldn't mind getting a few free pair, but I don't want to give all the details about what feels comfortable or where it rubs.  That's just TMI.
  • Food.  In general.  I am an EXTREMELY picky eater, so my opinion just wouldn't be fair.  Plus, I don't want to feel like I 'have' to try some pineapple-chocolate-pecan sports drink or something. I don't think I could do it.
  • Face wash.  My face is extremely sensitive and I can only wash it with a few things.  I'm afraid to try new things when it comes to my face cleaning routine.
  • Things to use in the bedroom.  Mood music, candles, toys.  This just ISN'T that type of blog :)
  • Dental services.....teeth cleaning, whitening, etc. No thank you. I hate going to the dentist & my teeth are just fine.
So, the point of this post? Don't send me yucky stuff to review, even if it's free. Make it good :)

Half Marathon Training: 4 Weeks to Go

I can't believe my first half is less than a month away!  This week, I took a little break from distance training and really focused on speedwork for my 5K on Saturday.  The faculty winner who comes in first during the race wins a $50 gift card, and I was determined that I was getting that card!! :)

Monday:  Speedwork.  0.5 warm-up, 4 x 0.25, 2 x 0.5, 0.5 cool down.  Total miles= 3

Tuesday:  Yoga Meltdown by Jillian Michaels.  OMG.  This feels so good, then hurts so bad.  I love the stretching it gives me, but it definitely works muscles that aren't being used while just running!

Wednesday: What happens when you go for a run 45-minutes after eating dinner?  A very painful, 3.1 miles with an average pace of 9:13 per mile.  Complete with 2 stops to dry-heave =/  Note to self:  45 minutes is NOT enough time to let your food settle.  I did take Max (and the girls) for a mile walk a little later, when my stomach settled, making my total mileage for the day = 4.

Thursday:  REST (I did do about 15 minutes of yoga before bed, including 3- 1 minute planks.)

Friday: REST

Saturday:  5K race-- 24:34 (If you missed my race recap, I WAS the first faculty member to come in, as well as the second female overall.)

Sunday:  6.5 miles.  (I had 8 on the training plan for today, but I am really struggling lately.  I have been absolutely exhausted lately.  Not just tired, but bone-deep weary.  If you know me in real-life, you know this is VERY unusual for me.  I am a super hyper person.  I've been reading a lot about runners and iron deficiency, and I definitely think that is my problem.  I have a whole post planned on this, but I have to do a little experiment first.  I'll keep you updated!)

Total weekly mileage: 15.7 (This number has REALLY got to go up in the next 2 weeks, before I start tapering back down leading up to the half!)

Weekly Workout--Stepping Up my Half Marathon Training

Half marathon training really kicked in this week.  After weeks of running 3-4 miles, 4-5 times a week to build my 'base', I started stepping it up with distance and speedwork.  If you care absolutely nothing about running, and don't want to read about my training, go here and watch this video instead:

Hello again to the two of you who stayed with me! :)

This week's runs were a mixture of good and bad.  It went a little like this:

Tuesday: I ran 2 miles at an 8:20 pace, and then tacked on 5 all-out sprints of about 30 meters (or right around 100 feet).

Wednesday:  4 miles at an average pace of 8:28.  Mile splits were 9:26, 8:50, 8:36, and 7:52.  I may not be super fast, but I am mastering those negative splits :)

Friday: Before I talk about my workout, I feel the need to point out that I got the flu shot on Wednesday afternoon.  NEVER again.  I felt like poop all day Thursday and Friday--aches, muscle soreness, upset stomach.  So understandably, while Friday's run may look good on paper, it was anything but good.  Half a mile in, I was struggling for air.  I hurt everywhere--shoulders, back, hips.  This was probably a run I should have just stopped, but a quitter I am not.  In spite of all that, I finished a 5K (3.1 miles for you non-runners) in 25:58.  Not too shabby of a run, considering I was on the verge of death.

Sunday:  The moment of truth.  Up until today, I had only put in one 5 miler and it killed me.  For some reason, I feel like if I could run 6, reasonably well, I would be able to do this whole half-marathon thing.  And I owned it.  (<--I can say that, it's my blog.  I can brag a little if I want too!)  6 miles (with quite a few hills) in 51:20.  That's an average pace of 8:32 per mile.  And in case you care, the mile splits looked like this:
1 mile- 9:26
2 miles- 8:45
3 miles- 8:20
4 miles- 8:08
5 miles- 8:51
6 miles- 7:40

I hit the metaphorical 'wall' at 5 miles.  I always run on an empty stomach, and plan to do that for the half.  However, I will be 'fueling' during the real run and plan to start that on my training runs to see what works best for me.  The great thing about these empty-stomach training runs is that I can really tell where I'll need to fuel.  Enter mile 5 of Sundays run.  =)

Next week's training steps it up even more, with a little cross-training thrown in for good measure.  The awesome thing about fall is that it is running SEASON!  I have several races on the calendar that I am super excited about and can't wait to share with you!

PS:  If you are in the area, I'm really looking for more running buddies.  Even if you can only hang for 2 or 3 miles of my long run, I'd love to have you! :)

Total miles this week:  15.6
Total smiley faces in this post:  4

The half-marathon plan: A post about running

I have always been an athletic person.  I started playing youth league softball before Kindergarten and didn't stop organized sports until graduation.  I did it all--softball, cheerleading, cross country, volleyball.  My junior year in high school, I would have cheer practice from 2:00-5:00 and then do my 3-to-5 mile cross country workout after that.  (Ironically, I was the biggest I have ever been at this point in my life.  I think I took carb-loading a little TOO seriously!)

After high school, I've remained pretty active.  Running, of course.  Church softball.  Wakeboarding.  Swimming.  Indoor Rock Climbing (on occasion).  Keeping up with two highly energetic children.  You get the point.  With summer almost over and fall quickly approaching, it's time for me to buckle down and start training for my half marathon.

One thing on my 30 before 30 list is to run the Country Music Half Marathon in Nashville, Tennessee (which is in April, 2014).  Truth be told, I wanted to run a half and I just picked that one because it sounded like fun.  I don't truly have my heart set on it being that EXACT half marathon, and I don't think I'll feel cheated if I don't run that one, but if I can, I want to.  (<--that has GOT to be the longest sentence ever!) I say all that because my life revolves around my girls, and with Kyndall playing sports, I will not miss a game just to run a 'specific' half marathon.  I do intend to run a half... maybe even more than one.  There are actually a few on the calendar that I am looking at--one in mid-September and one in late October.

Up until now, my running has been very haphazard.  I am in the bad habit of not running if I don't have time to run at least 3 miles.  This means I'll run 4 or 5 times a week for 2 weeks, and then not run at all the next.  I'm going to have to get organized with my running.  I think running has become this super complicated sport recently with all the nutrition-musts and training plans.  Personally, I don't think it should be so hard.  It's just running--when you can run 3 miles, do a 5K.  Then build from there.  That being said, since I already have a pretty decent running base, I'm going to very loosely follow this plan:
WeekMondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFridaySaturdaySunday
132RestXT34Rest
234RestXT36Rest
345RestXT48
445RestXT410Rest
556RestXT512Rest
64Rest21-2RestRestHalf Marathon!
Except, I'll probably swap Thursday/ Friday, so that I cross-train on Friday and run on Thursday.  It just works better for me that way.  Once I complete this plan, I'll probably have time do repeat it once before the race, depending on which one I decide to do.  I would love to remain in half-marathon condition at all times, in case one just popped-up that I wanted to run.

Any half-marathon tips for me?  Or races that just HAVE to be ran?

WMES Rebel Run <--proud mama over here!

Our whole family ran the annual Rebel Run 5K a few weeks ago.  I was the first woman to cross the finish line, with a time of 24:50.  Not my best time, but not too shabby either.  Especially since Justin was eating my dust the whole way!

Here I am, headed toward the finish line:

And here's Justin.  BEHIND me, crossing the finish line :)

And as fun as that was.  And as proud of myself as I was (mainly for beating Justin), what really made me smile was how excited my girls were to run.  Here Kyndall is running in toward the finish line.  I LOVE that smile on her face!!

And here is Libby, seconds behind Kyndall.  Little legs pumping as fast as they could go.

Mallory also jumped out and ran the 5k, after not training AT ALL.  She did pretty good, coming in somewhere around 35 minutes.  Judging by this smile on her face, she was obviously not running hard enough! Haha!

My Stinky Run + My 10K Playlist

I didn't realize this, but my last post was my 150th! WOW! If I wasn't lame and boring, I would've done a giveaway or something.  Right now, I only have 5 registered followers, but according to Blogger, somewhere around 150 people check my blog weekly.  A giveaway might be neat in the near future.  But on to today's post:

I ran a very stinky 3.2 miles this morning with a friend.  Part of that 3.2 was a BEAST of a hill, which lasts for almost the entire first mile.  Add to that the humidity outside, and the fact that I haven't really ran in almost two weeks, and you get the stinky part.  It was rough.  The only thing that got me through in a relatively decent time (when you consider all those stinky factors mentioned above) was my playlist.  I don't know if any of you listen to music while you workout, but I can't go without it.  My current playlist looks like this:

Fastest Girl In Town, Miranda Lambert
Dance the Night Away, David Banner (from Footloose)
Cruise (Remix), Florida Georgia Line and Nelly
Tell Me How You Like It, Florida Georgia Line
Get Your Shine On, Florida Georgia Line
Party In The U.S.A., Miley Cyrus
Airplanes Part 2, B.O.B. and Eminem
Just A Dream, Nelly
One More Night, Maroon Five
Keep Your Head Up, Andy Grammar
No Surprise, Daughtry
Eight Second Ride, Jake Owen
Love The Way You Lie, Eminem
No Diggity, Blackstreet and Dr. Dre

According to jog.fm, which calculates beats per minutes in songs and pairs them with running times, this playlist should have me running 8-ish minutes per mile.  It didn't work on today's run, but it has in the past, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.  What are your top workout songs?

For the Love of Yoga (A 30 Before 30 Update)

If you've read my 30 Before 30 post, you know that taking a yoga class is on that list.  So yesterday morning I woke up early and went to a yoga class near our house.  I talked my mom and a friend into going with me.  I have to say, I was a bit cocky about the whole yoga thing.  I thought, "I'm a runner.  I'm going to go in here and stretch my muscles out, yada, yada."  I was a little embarrassed.  The class was an hour long Yoga/ Pilates class and it worked muscles I didn't even know I had.  About halfway through my muscles were shaking so bad I didn't know if I would even be able to walk out of the gym.

The next day I was sore, but it was that pleasant soreness that comes from a really good workout.  I am definitely in love with yoga now.  Well, yoga and pilates.  It is such a great strength-training workout and the stretches help me feel long and lean.  I'll be going back to the class again, probably each time it's offered over the summer.  I also want to buy a DVD so that I can work out at home.  Any of you yog-inis out there have any recommendations on a good DVD?
